#Device graphics card settings

This tutorial includes step-by-step instructions for checking your graphics card, checking your model number, and setting up a high-performance graphics card in Windows, as well as a separate setup for Chrome.

1. Check whether there is a discrete graphics card and check the model number

View via Device Manager.

  1. Press the Win + X key combination and select [Device Manager]

  2. Expand the [Display Adapter] option, and two devices will usually be displayed in the list:

    • Integrated graphics (usually with "UHD", "Iris" or processor model such as "Intel Iris Xe")
    • Discrete graphics card (usually with a brand name such as "NVIDIA", "AMD", etc., such as "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU")

2. Set the device to use a high-performance graphics card

Set via the graphics card manufacturer’s control panel. Before setting, please make sure that the graphics card driver has been installed. You can confirm whether the driver has been installed by right-clicking on the desktop and checking whether there is an "NVIDIA Control Panel" or "Radeon Settings" option in the menu. If not, you can visit the graphics card manufacturer (NVIDIA or the official website of AMD), download and install the latest driver according to your graphics card model and operating system.

NVIDIA graphics card users

  1. Right-click a blank area on the desktop and select [NVIDIA Control Panel]

  2. Select [3D Settings][Manage 3D Settings][Global Settings] tab in the left menu → Find [Preferred Graphics Processor] or [OpenGL Rendering GPU], set it to "High Performance NVIDIA Processor" or select your independent graphics card model

  3. Set the high-performance graphics card for a specific program in the graphics card control panel, switch to the [Program Settings] tab

    • Click the [Add] button and select the main executable file (.exe) of the program that needs to be set.

    • Select "High-Performance NVIDIA Processor" in the [Preferred Graphics Processor] or [OpenGL Rendering GPU] drop-down menu or select your discrete graphics card model

    • Click [Apply] to save settings

AMD graphics card users

  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop and select [Radeon Settings]

  2. Open the [System] settings in the upper right corner

  3. Click [Switchable Graphics Card] in the upper right corner

  4. Select [Running Applications] and click [Installed and Configured Applications]

  5. Click on the software you want to set to high performance and select the [High Performance] option in the drop-down menu.

3. Set up a high-performance graphics card for the Chrome browser

Assign high-performance graphics to specific programs through system settings.

Win10 system

  1. Press Win + I to open settings, select [System][Screen] → click [Graphics Settings]

  2. Right-click the Chrome shortcut on the desktop, select [Properties][Shortcut] tab → View the [Target] field, and copy the full path. If there is no desktop shortcut, you can directly navigate to the path in the Explorer

  3. Return to the [Graphics Settings] page, select [Desktop Application] → click the [Browse] button → paste or navigate to the browser installation path, select and click the [Add] button

  4. Click the [Options] button, select [High Performance] in the pop-up window and click the [Save] button

  5. Close all Chrome windows and restart the browser for the settings to take effect

Win11 system

  1. Press Win + I to open settings, select [System][Screen][Display Card], or directly search for [Graphics Settings] in the search bar

  2. Right-click the Chrome shortcut on the desktop, select [Properties][Shortcut] tab → View the [Target] field, and copy the full path. If there is no desktop shortcut, you can directly navigate to the path in the Explorer

  3. Return to the [Graphics Settings] page → click the [Add Desktop Application] button → paste or navigate to the browser installation path, select and click the [Add] button

  4. Click the Chrome program drop-down box and modify [GPU Preferences] to [High Performance]

  5. Close all Chrome windows and restart the browser for the settings to take effect
